People move countries for many reasons: economic opportunity, lifestyle changes, adventure, or personal goals. No matter what prompts them to move, staying in a country long term depends on developing a sense of belonging.
While moving abroad opens doors to exciting opportunities, it also brings challenges, such as adjusting to new cultural environments, overcoming language barriers, and navigating unfamiliar surroundings. Without familiar networks, many global movers struggle with isolation, unsure of how to create meaningful connections.
Finding a sense of community is often the key to making a smooth transition.
Building connections is not only beneficial for wellbeing, but also often determines whether someone feels settled enough to stay. Feeling part of a community is crucial to that.
With international migration steadily rising, this challenge is becoming more relevant than ever. According to the World Migration Report 2024, published by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), there were approximately 281 million international migrants worldwide, accounting for 3.6% of the global population. As more people move across borders, the need for connection, belonging, and community plays a defining role in whether they thrive in their new country, or struggle to stay.
From ‘Stranger Danger’ to ‘Stranger Opportunity’
In my latest podcast episode, I explore the idea of shifting from ‘Stranger Danger’ to ‘Stranger Opportunity’. It is natural, when stepping into a new country, to see others as strangers. However, we often overlook the fact that we too are seen as strangers in this unfamiliar environment.
By acknowledging this, we recognize that we are part of the same experience, a new face in someone else’s world. We open the door to building meaningful relationships and connection.
What sets us apart is often what makes us interesting. Whether it is an accent, a cultural habit, or simply a different perspective, these unique qualities can become starting points for conversations and bridges to deeper connections. When we work with what makes us different, rather than feeling isolated by it, we create more opportunities to be welcomed into the communities around us.
Breaking the Ice Without Breaking a Sweat
Small, simple steps, such as joining a class, starting a conversation, or exploring shared interests can help foster friendships and create a sense of belonging.
Community is about connection, inspiration, and growth. It is about stepping out of isolation and engaging in a supportive network.
